Utah Legislation

During the 2024 legislative session, Utah’s legislature considered and passed several harmful bills. From anti-trans bathroom bills to bans on diversity, equity, and inclusion in schools to a proposed law requiring schools to display the Ten Commandments, the session has been a wild and frightening few months.

I spoke before a legislative committee regarding some of these laws, but to no avail. As a therapeutic response, I created the following projects to help me process the anger and fear I felt regarding this damaging legislation.

BEWARE Posters

Utah's Republican and LDS super-majority passed a bill to 'make bathrooms safer,' so I made several printable posters to highlight the actual danger male legislators and clergy pose in public bathrooms. Since Utah’s legislators are so concerned about bathrooms, I'm sure they will be thrilled to see warnings like these in bathrooms across the state.

I shared the poster on Reddit, where it has been seen by more than 55,000 people and been shared more than 250 times.

There are several variations of this poster that can be downloaded for free:

Play Stupid Games, Win Stupid Prizes

During the 2024 legislative session, Utah Republicans introduced a bill that would compel public K12 schools to display The Ten Commandments on their campuses. If they didn’t have one already, they would be required to display the first one donated.

This bill had no hope of passing given its blatant unconstitutionality, and an alternate version that doesn’t include the display of posters moved forward. To highlight how poorly-written the original bill was, I created several posters that comply with the letter of the law, but not its spirit. The four designs include:

  1. Fonts were not specified or limited by the bill, so this almost-illegible font complies.
  2. Text color was not specified, so this rainbow poster complies.
  3. Arrangement of text was not specified, so this Satanic pentagram complies.
  4. Type sizes were not specified, so this humorous poster complies.
