TJ for Cedar City
Council Campaign

During this municipal campaign, more than ten candidates were running for city council. TJ Penrod, a small business owner and educator, was my top pick for the position, and I jumped at the chance to help with the campaign. Most of the candidates were part of the religious majority and had professions in law or real estate, and their campaigns used a standard patriotic color scheme.

Since TJ was a non-traditional candidate, I made sure his branding reflected that. His yellow and turquoise color scheme stood out from the other signs, but also stood out against the vibrant green of summer in Cedar City. Emphasis was given to his first name because it was unique, and using it made the campaign more personable.

Canvassing Materials

As a progressive campaign in rural Utah, we did not have the support of a Political Action Committee, so we had to get creative with our very limited budget. To reach voters, we canvassed with information cards and buttons, which were a hit at events. I created 14 button designs in total, which ranged from TJ’s positions on various issues to fun options. The buttons with TJ’s face on them and the ones that said “I support the guy with the beard” were the most popular.

Digital Presence

Through strategic planning, we were able to build the largest social media presence in this race. Although the Facebook page, which included 600 followers, is archived, the Instagram page can be viewed by clicking here. Branded posts highlighted TJ’s positions, our canvassing efforts, and opportunities to interact with the candidate. One of the most popular outreach efforts was the Facebook frame voters used to show their support for TJ.

To provide a professional digital space for the campaign, I created a website that described TJ, mentioned the issues he wanted to tackle if elected, and linked to official election information.
